Wearing Our Crowns : International Women's Day

From the wise words of former First Lady, Michelle Obama, “There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.”

On the 8th of March, we wear our crowns proudly. On this day, we celebrate the capability of women, we honour the women who came before us who had fought for the rights we have today, and we empower each other with the fuel of love, appreciation, and feminism. Nowadays, the treatment of women is much better improved and that is an enrapturing action that we are all proud of. Despite this though, there are still women and little girls out there who are abused, bitten and cruelly ill-treated. They are still discriminated and judged rudely; they still must be scorched by the fire of underestimation. Although women are being acknowledged and loved currently, that still does not ignore the fact that there are still girls and women out there, sitting out in a choleric storm, sheets of tears covering their cheeks, assailable to a staccato of mean words and actions that serves as bullets to them, while they remain ignored. To all those women out there, whether you might be weak or strong, on this day, hold your gilded crown tight and do not let it fall.

From the start of time, varying from Cleopatra’s reign to leaders like Kamala Harris, women have been constantly beaten down and held back with the unforgiving tethers of jaundice: physically, mentally, and spiritually. People used to spare a look at a woman, and assume that they are constructed out of weakness, fragility, and stay-at-home spouse material. They do not see the strength that have travailed for, they do not see the power that should be lionized, so they made some noise and now they have been heard. In regards to this, ever since the year of 1977, the United Nations started celebrating this day globally, to value what is known as feminism. Feminism. Most people think that feminism is a form of activism that advocates for the rights of women. But that is not true. Feminism has always been about the belief that both men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. Do not make this a velleity or a dream. Make this happen. For both men and women. Dear Reader, wipe the apprehension away, go against your own grain if it would benefit someone, and speak up. What you can do on this day is to acknowledge your loved ones and make them feel loved, join a movement or support and advocate for gender equality in your community. It is time to transfer the wrath and the grimaces to warmth and smiles. It is not too late.

To all the women and girls, let us don our jewels of ignited gold. Let us hold hands with everyone and find beauty in every shape, size, and colour. Let us commemorate all those who had sweat blood for us, for today on the 8th of March, we wear our crowns proudly. Together.
